Sizing Systems
The supposedly easy job of sizing new systems is not as easy as it looks, either. Don't leave this one to hardware manufacturers alone.
Usually the hardware provider takes on the job of actually sizing the system. The advice of the quick-sizer of the SAP system is usually sought for new installations who, when changes need to be made, uses the rule of thumb "x% more SAPs for the new release".
Sizing is a lot more accurate when based on the measurement of a system which takes actual use as a starting point. In such cases the experience of VMS identifies entirely individual needs.
In one case in point we were able to save one company from having to spend a lot of money upgrading its hardware because the application also ran with the desired performance after the release change – as VMS predicted.
In another company, we were able to demonstrate that the extent of the planned re-equipping would not be sufficient.
Finally, hardware simply can't solve all performance problems. This was confirmed to us by a client who completely doubled his hardware power in a rollout, only to find that performance had not improved. Only a targeted tuning by VMS brought the desired success.
